Biography

kingB - before Cornbury

The Band

The band was formed in 1993 by three of the current members and has been playing blues ever since! kingB plays a mixture of classic electric blues tunes, soul, and original material.

kingB features Claire Johnson, the Vivacious Vixen of the Vocal, the Groovy Guitars of John Lanyon and Ian Phillips, the Headmaster of the Harmonica, Ian Grierson, John "the Cat" Corlett on bass and Ian Clark driving the drums.

kingB's repertoire includes classic blues written by Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Buddy Guy and T-Bone Walker as well as original material by John Lanyon and John Corlett. Jonny says "We want you to dance, we want you to sing, we want you to have a good time!"

The name kingB comes from the Slim Harpo song "I'm a King Bee". kingB trivia… "have you noticed the very high proportion of Johns and Ians in this band?"

The Members

Claire Johnson

Claire Johnson  Claire is the singer! A direct descendant of Robert, Lonnie and Johnny Johnson. Her vocals will break your heart, melt the pieces and give you back the will to live. A fan of white wine spritzers, serious motorcars and Hungarian dogs. The first song Claire sang with kingB was "I'm Ready" and there was no doubt that she was. Claire also sings occasionally in an acoustic duo with Ian Phillips.

Ian Clark

Ian Clark  Ian was allegedly taught to play drums in a pub by Chris Leslie of Fairport Convention. He is renowned for his shuffle but, in fact, has always walked that way. Ian is a keen watcher of the night sky and dreams of travelling in space. Loves Scuba, Skydiving, Motorbikes and eating pistachio nuts (not at the same time…) Ian plays Premier drums & Zildjian cymbals. A prince of percussive perfection.

John Corlett

John Corlett  aka "Cat". Multi-instrumentalist Cat played keyboards in the earliest incarnation of kingB, then switched to bass. A fan of Greece, Brawley basses and real ale, he was switched on to the blues around 1965 by a neighbour's Jimmy Reed imports, and promptly got on his bike and scoured the record shops of north London for more. Cat has co-written much of kingB's original material with Jonny. He also brews the coffee and Greek mountain tea at kingB's arduous weekly rehearsals.

John Lanyon

John Lanyon  aka "Jonny". Jonny grew up on the lefthand side of the tracks and has been a keen proponent of public transport ever since. He plays a black Gibson Les Paul guitar and uses Marshall amplification. He prefers an overdriven, rich, dark tone. He writes original material for kingB. His musical heroes include John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell. Jonny says "You don't choose the blues. The blues chooses you".

Ian Phillips

Ian Phillips  If Ian were offered an endorsement deal, most likely it would be from Fender. He plays Fender acoustic and electric guitars and uses Fender amplification. He likes Bob Dylan, Macintosh computers and sailing boats. He doesn't like inferior-quality gaffer tape. He plays with a bright, clean tone. Besides his fleet-fingered lead guitar lines he also plays slide guitar.

Ian Grierson

Ian Grierson  The Headmaster of the blues harp. A degree from Oxford in sucking and blowing and very popular with the ladies… Ian plays Lee Oscar harps and uses Pig Nose amplification. He grew up in Liverpool and then travelled south to spend memorable evenings at the Marquee. Talk to him nicely and he'll show you his Cavern Club membership card. Not as scary as his photo might suggest.
